10 Must-Play Video Games Releasing in May 2023

Another month brings new video game releases to look forward to. From highly-anticipated sequels to fresh new titles, May is shaping up to be an exciting month for video game releases. As the weather heats up outside, you can cool down indoors and immerse yourself in the virtual worlds of these upcoming games. Alternatively, in your in Australia, we all know anything below 20 degrees is too cold to be outdoors, so why not stay warm with some new blockbuster titles?

Here are some of the top video game releases coming in May that you won’t want to miss.

Redfall – May 2

Redfall is an upcoming open-world, single player and co-op FPS game developed by Arkane Austin, known for their award-winning games Prey and Dishonored.

The game is set in the island town of Redfall, Massachusetts, which is under siege by vampires who have cut off the town from the outside world. Players can explore the open world and unravel the mystery behind the vampires’ appearance.

Redfall allows players to either play alone or squad up with up to four players for co-op play, with teammates able to try different hero loadouts and combine their strengths to find creative solutions to the vampire apocalypse.

The game features diverse heroes, each with their own character-specific abilities, to challenge the vampires and their followers. The open world of Redfall blends the familiar with the extraordinary, with players fighting through cultist outposts and supernatural psychic spaces as they piece together Redfall’s many mysteries. If it’s anything like Arkane’s most recent release, Deathloop, we are going to be in for a treat.

Redfall releases on May 2, 2023, on Xbox Series X and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store and Microsoft. The game will be free on day one for Xbox Game Pass.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – May 12

The highly-anticipated sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is arguably the biggest video game release in May, and possibly one of the biggest releases of the year. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom takes place in a transformed and expanded Hyrule with new towns, caves, and mysterious chasms waiting to be explored. Link has new abilities like Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend, and Recall, which can be used creatively to build, battle and play in new ways.

Humanity – May 16

Humanity is a third-person puzzle-action game where players control a dog to lead massive crowds of people through 90 story-mode stages. The game offers a mix of puzzles, platformer-like levels, and epic boss battles. Users can browse an ever-growing library of user-generated stages, or create and share their own using the intuitive Stage Creator.

Humanity is available in both standard display and optional VR mode. The video game releases on May 16, 2023, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PlayStation VR/VR2, and PC via Steam.

The Outlast Trials – May 18

The Outlast Trials, by Red Barrels, has developed a new game where players are recruited as human test subjects by the Murkoff Corporation to test advanced methods of brainwashing and mind control during the Cold War era.

Players can choose to play alone or in teams of up to four and must survive by avoiding enemies and hiding or fleeing from them. The game also includes character customisation, upgrades, and perks to fit each player’s playstyle, as well as the ability to investigate and collect evidence against the Murkoff Corporation. If players survive long enough and complete the therapy, they may be allowed to leave, but the question remains whether they will be the same; very spooky.

Firmament (PC) – May 18

Firmament is a new puzzle-adventure game by Cyan Worlds, the studio behind the best-selling games Myst and Riven. It features deep storytelling and world-building, inviting players to explore the mysteries of three unique realms and beyond.

With a unique steampunk aesthetic, Firmament offers a visually stunning and plausible world that players can interact with using a device called the “Adjunct” to solve puzzles. Along the way, players will be accompanied by a mysterious apparition who has a story to share.

Firmament is available for both VR and 2D displays, similar to the recent Myst VR remake. The game supports Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Rift S, and Quest 2 via Oculus Link. Amnesia: The Bunker – May 23

Amnesia: The Bunker is a first-person horror game developed by the creators of SOMA and, of course, Amnesia. Players take on the role of Henri Clément, a French soldier trapped in a desolate WW1 bunker with limited supplies and only one bullet left. The game offers multiple ways to survive, with randomisation and unpredictable behaviour ensuring that no two playthroughs are the same.

Players must explore and experiment to make their way out while being hunted by a dynamic, ever-present monster that reacts to their every move and sound. With constant tension and multiple solutions to problem-solving, Amnesia: The Bunker provides a truly intense horror experience.

Miasma Chronicles – May 23

In a future where America has been devastated by the ‘Miasma’, a young man named Elvis with a mysterious glove that controls the Miasma, and his robotic brother embark on a quest to find answers that could change the course of human history forever.

Miasma Chronicles features real-time exploration, tactical turn-based combat with RPG elements, upgradeable weapons and abilities, and a rich fantasy story with unique characters. The game is created by the developers of Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden and promises to be a beautifully crafted tactical adventure.

The game releases on May 23, 2023, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam.

Star Trek: Resurgence – May 23

Star Trek: Resurgence is an interactive video game that features an original story set shortly after Star Trek: The Next Generation. Players will play as first officer Jara Rydek and engineering ensign Carter Diaz as they investigate a dangerous mystery that could lead two civilisations to war. Through dialogue choices and action gameplay, players will interact with both new and returning characters in the Star Trek universe, ultimately deciding the fate of the story.

Star Trek: Resurgence releases on May 23, 2023, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Epic Games Store.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum – May 25

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is an action-adventure game that follows the untold story of Gollum, an enigmatic character from J.R.R. Tolkien’s famous book series. The game takes place in parallel to the events described in The Fellowship of the Ring, and players take on the role of Gollum on his perilous journey to retrieve his Precious.

The game features both action and stealth gameplay, as Gollum uses his unique skills to explore and infiltrate legendary locations while avoiding enemies. Players also get to experience Gollum’s split personality, as they make moral choices that determine the future of their alliances.

Tennis Manager 2023 – May 25

Tennis Manager 2023, the follow-up from the 2021 release of the same name, focuses on team spirit and offers realistic tennis simulation on and off the court.

If you’re a fan of in-depth analysis games like Football Manager then this is the game for you. Players can access over 2,000 tournaments and manage their academy’s finances, contracts, and investments. They can also design a training program and perfect their speeches in press conferences. With the 3D engine, players can immerse themselves in the game and coach their players in real-time.

Tennis Manager 2023 will release on May 25, 2023, for PC via Steam, just before Roland Garros.
