Star Wars Outlaws: Can You Play it On Steam Deck?

Star Wars Outlaws is playable on PC, but can Steam Deck enthusiasts enjoy it on the go? The answer is a little more complicated than you may think.

Playing on the go is frankly amazing. It may not be for everyone, but there’s nothing quite like slashing through Stormtroopers in Star Wars Jedi: Survivor while on the toilet. Of course, for Star Wars and toilet enthusiasts, the next best game to play on the go will be Star Wars Outlaws. However, while you can play it on the Steam Deck, it’s going to take a little bit of work.

Is Star Wars Outlaws Playable on the Steam Deck?

No, officially, Star Wars Outlaws is not playable on the Steam Deck. This is because Ubisoft has decided not to release the open-world Star Wars game onto Steam or even the Epic Games Store. It is locked to its own launcher, Ubisoft Connect. So, you won’t be able to purchase Star Wars Outlaws on Steam and, therefore, play it on the Steam Deck.

However, you could technically play it on the Steam Deck if you’re willing to undergo a fairly lengthy process. Essentially, it involves downloading Ubisoft Connect on your Steam Deck through the Desktop Mode, which is definitely doable, especially with a good tutorial. Fortunately, we’ve explained it below:

  • On your Steam Deck, switch to Desktop Mode
  • Download the Ubisoft Connect installer
  • Go to your Steam Library (still in the Desktop Mode)
  • Click Add a Game in the bottom left corner
  • Select Add Non-Steam Game
  • Choose Browse
  • Locate and add the Ubisoft Connect installer
  • In your library, right-click on the installer and select Properties
  • Go to Compatability, then tick “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool
  • Select Proton Experimental from the drop-down menu
  • Click play on the Ubisoft Connect installer in your library
  • When prompted to select a destination folder, choose Z:\home\deck\Games
  • Finish the installation process
  • Next, click Add a Game in Steam
  • Select Add Non-Steam Game
  • Choose Browse
  • Go to Z:\home\deck\Games\Ubisoft Game Launcher
  • Select UbisoftConnect.exe
  • Right-click on UbisoftConnect in your library and select Properties
  • Once again, go to Compatability, then tick “Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool
  • Select Proton Experimental from the drop-down menu
  • Click Play on UbisoftConnect
  • Log in to your account
  • Quit Ubisoft Connect and return to Gaming Mode
  • Head into your Library and then the Non-Steam section to find it

As we said, it’s quite the process, but in doing so, you can technically play Ubisoft Connect games on your Steam Deck. If you’re a video tutorial kind of person, then you may want to check out the very helpful video below by Santiago Santiago.

So, yes, you can play Star Wars Outlaws on your Steam Deck. However, the chances of it running well are very slim. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was playable on Steam Deck but rarely hit 30 FPS. As Star Wars Outlaws seems to be even more graphically intensive, especially with its multiple planets, it’s possible that it will lag a lot on Steam Deck. Of course, it’s up to you whether you want to take the risk, but we don’t recommend using the Steam Deck as your main way to play Star Wars Outlaws.
