Nintendo held a Nintendo Indie World Showcase event today featuring 20 new indie games coming to the Nintendo Switch over the next few months.
What Was Announced?
It feels like two months ago you couldn’t turn a corner on the internet without bumping into someone screaming for a new direct. Now it feels like everyone and their dog is pumping a direct-styled event, with Square Enix, Wired Productions, PlayStation and Nintendo having put various directs out across the past few months. Today, Nintendo sprung an Indie World Showcase event, which showcased a series of upcoming indie titles from ports to entirely new games (and even a surprise announcement).
The Nintendo Switch feels like the perfect place for indie titles, and these Indie World Showcase events are perfect way to get that message across. With twenty new games announced for the Nintendo Switch during this direct alone, it feels like maybe 2021 is the year of indies for the platform. Of course, not everyone has time to sit back and watch a twenty-minute direct. So I’ve compiled a handy list that runs through everything announced and when they’re reportedly releasing. So, sit back, relax, and read this much shorter article. Hopefully there’s something exciting in here for everyone:
The Announcements
- The first announcement of the direct was Road 96 a procedurally story-driven game with “thousands of potential paths to take”. It certainly looks interesting and is launching later this year.
- Aerial_Knights Never Yield, a visually stunning runner with an upbeat soundtrack by Detroit artist Daniel Wilkins releases this May 19th. A demo will be available later today for those who want to try before they buy.
- Annapurna Interactive showed off two of their upcoming games including the very British Last Stop and the incredibly stylish Hindsight. Last Stop launches this July 2021, and Hindsight sometime later this year.
- Olli Olli World, the latest in the Olli Olli series, looks like a mash-up between Adventure Time and Tony Hawks. It’s a weirdly wacky skating game and it is set to launch this Winter.
- The Longing, a game in which you must wait 400 years (no, literally) is making its way to the Nintendo Switch later today.
- They announced that No Game: Wrong Dimensions, the hilarious point and click comedy adventure, is also launching later today.
- If Narita Boy didn’t satiate your hunger for 80’s styled games, then Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, a game literally styled after the classic beat ’em ups of yesteryear will be coming to the Nintendo Switch sometime in 2021.
- Cris Tales the gorgeous time-shifting RPG has finally received a release date of July 20th.
- GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon is a hack and slash roguelite set in the perilous underworld. It is launching for the Nintendo Switch sometime next year.
- Action-adventure title, Aztech Forgotten Gods, puts the player in the role of Achtli as she fights to take down colossal gods in this techno-infused Aztec adventure. It launches this fall.
- Skul: The Hero Slayer, the critically acclaimed 2D platformer is coming to the Switch this summer.
- There was a quick-fire round in which they showed off:

- KeyWe (this august)
- Labyrinth City: Pierre the Maze Detective (this spring)
- Weaving Tides (this May)
- The House of the Dead: Remake (later this year)
- ENDER LILIES: Quietus of the Knights (this June 21)
- Beasts of Maravilla Island (this June)
- Fez (today)
- They announced that the Nintendo eShop is hosting an Indie World Sale later today.
- Finally, they made the surprise announcement of Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals which is launching sometime this year.
