Warner Bros. Loses $200 Million After Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Called a Huge Failure

Warner Bros.’s unsuccessful release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has caused them to take a $200 million hit.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League had mixed reviews from the start. It was a mishap only 72 hours before release, as those who pre-ordered had the entire campaign completed when the game launched, ultimately spoiling who died. Its troubles continued post-launch as it failed to get a significant player base, and fans didn’t enjoy its short story or its lack of meaningful endgame content. Naturally, this led to Warner Bros’ revenue taking a significant nosedive, especially compared to the enormous success of the single-player microtransactionless juggernaut, Hogwarts Legacy.

How Did Warner Bros. Take A $200 Million Hit?

As Warner Bros. reported its financial results for Q1 2024, the company saw its revenues decrease significantly compared to last year. Due to Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League having an underwhelming release, it missed Warner Bros. expectations. This is mainly because of Hogwarts Legacy’s brilliant release last year and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League’s unsatisfactory release. Unfortunately, the drastic difference in releases between both games has led to a 200 million USD impact to Warner Bros’ EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) during this year’s first quarter.

Warner Bros. is up for a challenging year ahead, but they don’t seem to be helping themselves. After all, this huge revenue loss and failed release brings into question the company’s questionable decision to step away from AAA titles and go all in on live service games. While Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League had a lot of potential, the number of delays and poor implementation of live service elements killed any interest fans had when it launched.

Although WB Discovery boss David Zaslav has admitted that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was a “disappointing” release, fans of the game can still expect to experience the three promised seasons. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is set to launch new playable characters, environments, and much more in the coming future. However, due to the number of players diminishing from the unsuccessful game, it’s hard to say if it will be a success.
