How Does Romance Work in Starfield?

Romancing in Starfield revolves around making choices that align with your chosen companion’s values. This involves choosing dialogue options and actions that they approve of, indicated by a notification at the top-right corner of your screen.

Be careful though, companions can dislike you for your actions and it’s a long road to mend a broken heart in the cold depths of space.

As you deepen your relationship, the “[Flirt]” option will start to appear in dialogues, giving you the opportunity to take things to the next level. Achieve a high enough approval rating and your chosen companion will eventually propose a unique mission, the successful completion of which opens up further dialogue options.

Engage in a conversation with your hopeful romantic companion and you’ll see the “[Friendship]” or “[Romance]” options. Now it’s time to pull the trigger on love or friend zone your companion. If you choose to romance them, you’ll eventually be given the option of “[commitment]” which can lead to an interstellar marriage. While the mechanics will feel familiar to fans of other Bethesda games like Fallout 4, they offer enough depth and nuance to keep both new and seasoned players engaged.

Whether you’re looking to find the love of your life among the stars or simply looking to forge strong friendships, Starfield offers you a variety of options to do so. Happy romancing, space explorers!
