There’s some sweet treasure tucked away in the Vernworth Castle Vault in Dragon’s Dogma 2, but how do you open it?
The solution to opening Vernworth Castle’s Vault is a bit more complicated than you may expect from more typical action RPGs. Dragon’s Dogma 2 has no lockpicking system, and you can’t break down doors by attacking them. This means that you will either have to find a specific key to unlock the Vernworth Castle Vault or wait until a certain time when it is unlocked. Either way, it’s absolutely worth the effort, as it has some excellent loot for the early game.
How to Get the Makeshift Vault Key in Dragon’s Dogma 2
To open the Vernworth Castle Vault in Dragon’s Dogma 2, you must first obtain the Makeshift Vault Key, located near the Ancient Battleground, which is west of Vernworth and north of Checkpoint Rest Town. Then, head back to Vernworth Castle and get past the guard in front of the Vault to unlock the door and access the rewards within.
The easiest way to obtain the Makeshift Vault Key is by initiating and completing the “Tolled to Rest” side quest. While following the road towards the Ancient Battlegrounds north of the Checkpoint Rest Town, you will encounter Oscar, who enlists your aid to guide him through the area and ring a bell. Completing the quest will lead you to the chest that contains the Makeshift Vault Key. Once you have it, you can return to Vernworth Castle to enter the vault.
Vernworth Castle Vault: How to Get Past the Guard
To get past the guard in front of the Vernworth Vault, you must either throw a barrel at the guard to get them to chase you, kill them outright, or wait until nighttime to sneak in the vault when Disa checks up on it. Of course, you’ll need to locate the vault in the first place! You can find it at this point in the Castle:
Once you’ve located the Vault, you’ll see a guard in front of it who will warn you if you get too close. By far, the easiest way to get past them is to pick up a nearby barrel and throw it at them. This will make them aggressive and cause them to run towards you. When this happens, press the “Grab” button to pick them up and throw them over your shoulder. Then, run into the kitchen nearby and place them on the floor. Make sure to run back to the vault as quickly as you can to get your rewards! You can also kill the guard outright or try to sneak in at night when Disa is checking up on the vault. However these methods both risk you being caught and sent to the nearest gaol!
