While there are handy tutorials to guide players, sometimes it isn’t always clear how you should best position your troops. If you stand any chance of winning the war, then you’ll want to put your soldiers where they’ll be the most useful. Fortunately, we’ve explained the best formations below to help you win every battle.
Best Formations to Use in Unicorn Overlord
The best formations in Unicorn Overlord have a strong defense in the front row and either a powerful attack or support in the back row. This can mean putting Hoplites, Gladiators, Warriors, or Paladins in the front row and Hunters, Knights, Clerics, or Wizards in the back row. Below, we’ve listed some examples of how this could look with characters you can easily get in the early game. This way, you’ll have a strong start to easily dominate every battle.
Best Valor Formation

Alain’s Morale Boost ability allows the unit to gain additional Valor with every kill, essentially increasing the amount of Valor actions you can take. With Clive’s Assaulting Lance ability, he can gain an additional AP with every kill, allowing Clive and Alain to essentially chain kills and Valor. Hodrick acts as the buffer, defending Alain and Clive while dealing a little damage himself.
A few tips for this formation include:
- Have Clive’s Assaulting Lance ability’s condition be Lowest HP.
- Increase Clive’s physical damage to ensure he kills his opponent in one shot
- Increase Hodrick’s physical damage as he can be quite weak
Best Attack Formation

Clive’s Assaulting Lance is the star of the show here, as it’ll allow you to build up a lot of AP, ensuring you can chain as many attacks as possible. Mordon in the front row will deal with any pesky Hoplites that threaten to block your attacks. Meanwhile, Rolf will ensure that any Thieves are dealt with, giving Clive free rein to take down any remaining enemies.
If you’d rather have a healer, then switch Clive’s Assaulting Lance for Unwavering Lance, as it’s more effective against high-evasion enemies. That way, you can add Sharon to the back row, instead of Rolf, to act as the unit’s healer.
A few tips for this formation include:
- Have Clive’s Assaulting Lance ability’s condition be Lowest HP.
- Increase Clive’s physical damage to ensure he kills his opponent in one shot.
- Increase Rolf’s damage to ensure he kills his opponent in one shot.
Best Support Formation

Auch can provide Magic Assist as the leader, making this unit a perfect support team. If you’d rather forgo the additional healer, you can switch Josef for Hodrick or Sharon for Rolf. This will still provide plenty of defense while improving your attack and chances of defeating high-evasion enemies.
A few tips for this formation include:
- Increase Clive’s defense to ensure he can withstand multiple assaults.
- Increase Auch’s damage by giving him the Chlorotic staff.
