Transmog Won’t Be Coming to Helldivers 2 Because “It Doesn’t Make Sense”

If you were hoping Helldivers 2 may get a transmog system in a future update, you’re out of luck. According to the developer, it doesn’t make sense.

Transmog in video games is a relatively recent inclusion. It allows players to wear one set of clothing or armor while still gaining the stats and benefits of another. For example, you could, in theory, wear a big hulking suit of armor but have the speed stats of a much lighter set of equipment. It essentially ensures that players aren’t forced to look a certain way just to ensure that they have the best stats. Players have wanted this feature added to Helldivers 2 since it launched, as certain armor sets just look unequivocally better. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like that’s happening any time soon.

Helldivers 2 Won’t Be Getting Transmog, According to CEO

Despite players requesting a transmog feature in Helldivers 2 in order to customize their look, they won’t be getting it. This has been stated pretty clearly by the CEO of Arrowhead Studios, Johan Pilestedt, who develops Helldivers 2, as, apparently, “it doesn’t make sense.” Taking to X, formerly Twitter, to explain why the game won’t be getting Transmog, Pilestedt explained that it “is like having an apple that tastes like bacon.”

Essentially, Pilestedt believes that each armor set in Helldivers 2 looks the way it does because of its stats. So, the big bulky armor is big and bulky because it’s meant to be slow and offer good defense. It wouldn’t make much sense to then use that armor but have the speed and low defense of a Light armor. His full quote reads: “We are not doing transmog. It doesn’t make sense – equipment looks different because it has different effects. Swapping one for the other is like having an apple that tastes like bacon or the other way around.”

However, while some players may want transmog so they can have the stats of one armor set and not the other, we’re more inclined to believe that it’s about an armor’s ability. Armor in Helldivers 2 comes with a unique ability, such as being able to bring in additional stims. Unfortunately, you cannot equip certain abilities to different armor. However, with a transmog system, you would be able to have more stims but not look like a courgette.

Nevertheless, Pilestedt has spoken. It looks like Helldivers 2 won’t be getting transmog, at least any time soon. For now, you’ll just have to focus on which helmet and cape you want to wear, as they don’t affect your stats or ability. Do you think Helldivers 2 should have a transmog system?
