Joel is an incredibly important figure in Helldivers 2 and the master behind all your luck and misfortune. Well, at least where blasting Automatons and Terminids is concerned.
It’s not uncommon to see hundreds of thousands of players storming one planet in Helldivers 2 in an effort to claim it for Super-Earth. If you’ve joined the fray yourself, you may have found yourself at the mercy of a Game Master. They’re a mysterious figure who chooses when to bless you with a helpful stratagem or punish you with yet another wave of Automaton reinforcements. Well, that mysterious figure has been revealed, and yep, you guessed it, it’s Joel.
Who Is Joel in Helldivers 2?
Joel is the Game Master in Helldivers 2 and a developer at Arrowhead Studios. He is the one who controls which planets are invaded and by what faction, as well as the person who dictates how easy or difficult it is to take a planet. If players are finding it too easy to reclaim a planet, Joel will reinforce the enemy faction. However, if players are struggling, he’ll give players free stratagems to use.
Arrowhead Studios CEO Johan Pilestedt revealed to PC Gamer that Joel is the one controlling the Helldivers 2 campaign. Pilestedt explained that there is “an actual person with the job title of Game Master.” He went on to say that there are “a lot of systems built into the game where the Game Master has a lot of control over the play experience.” Apparently, Joel has even had to get up in the middle of the night to reinforce the Automatons just because players were finding it too easy.
So, any time you’re battling against the Automatons and their reinforcements suddenly grow, or you find yourself with a handy free stratagem, that’s Joel. He’s the guiding hand in Helldivers 2, controlling the flow of battle and ensuring everyone is having a great time. Essentially, he’s a D&D Dungeon Master, except Helldiver 2’s gritter, democracy-spreading, green-blood-covered version.
