The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered: No Return Mode Gameplay Details Explained

The Last of Us Part 2 is returning with a remastered edition that comes packaged with a brand-new roguelike mode called No Return. Here’s everything you need to know about it.

The Last of Us Part 2 is getting the same upgraded treatment as the original game. A Remastered edition has been announced that includes brand-new behind-the-scenes content, technical enhancements for the PS5’s hardware, and entirely new modes. One such mode is No Return, a mysterious roguelike mode that fans are curious about. Fortunately, we’ve got you covered. Below, we’ve outlined everything there is to know about this brand-new mode.

What Is The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered: No Return Mode?

The No Return mode in the Last of Us Part 2 Remastered is a survival roguelike experience. This mode allows players to be thrown into many familiar places and go up against memorable enemies seen throughout The Last of Us Part 2’s campaign. There are 4 objective types you’ll experience in this mode. These are:

  • Assault
    • This puts you up against waves of enemies
  • Capture
    • Requires you to break into a guarded safe
  • Holdout
    • You and an AI-controlled friend will defend each other against swarming Infected
  • Hunted
    • You’ll need to survive ongoing enemy reinforcements until the timer reaches zero

Death is permanent in the No Return mode. If you fail to reach your run’s end, you’ll lose everything you’ve accumulated, such as weapons, items, and upgrades. Between each encounter, you will return to the Hideout. There, you replenish, prepare, and select your next fight on the path layout available on the corkboard inside the Hideout.

During your time playing, you’ll also have access to resources, upgradeable weapons for Ellie and Abby’s arsenal, and skill trees. However, upgrades and skill trees are reset after each run, and weapon drops vary. This aspect of No Return requires difficult choices to be made. If you find yourself at the end of a run, you’ll go against one of six available boss encounters. These enemies will be bosses you’ve fought in The Last of Us Part 2. However, they’ll be seen in different ways than when you first encountered them in the campaign. You can see gameplay of the No Return mode in the trailer below:

Does The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered: No Return Have Metagame?

Yes, the Last of Us Part 2 Remastered No Return mode has an available Metagame, regardless of whether you survive a run or not. No Return offers many metagame objectives and unlockables, such as new characters, skins, and more. These long-term objectives include unlocking a wider range of characters to play as, such as Ellie’s companions Dina, Joel, Tommy, and Jesse, and Abby’s companions Lev, Yara, Mel, and Many.

Each character you unlock will also have a set of unique traits to accommodate everyone’s playstyle. They’ll also be available challenge tracks, which are also linked to each playable character. Once you complete these objectives, you’ll unlock things from new characters to skins to gameplay twists like Gambits, buddies, and more. This continues to help No Return’s replayability as you play each run.

However, if players want a competitive experience in No Return, there is a Daily Run mode with a world leaderboard. Each player participating in the Daily Run will only have one shot at the same generated run with the same character. Although each run is randomized, you’ll also have access to custom runs, which allow players to turn several factors on or off in No Return.

When Will The Last Of Us Part 2 Remastered: No Return Be Available To Play?
