Geometry Dash has had its first update in 7 years, with version 2.2 releasing today, and it has seen its player count hit a new concurrent peak.
Geometry Dash, the incredibly popular rhythm-based action platformer, has seen huge success since it launched on Steam back in 2014. However, while it was frequently updated at launch, the game saw few updates after 2017. Nevertheless, the player count persisted, and its over 250,000 reviews on the platform undoubtedly brought in more fans. Now, almost 7 years later, an update has brought in new features and seen the player count skyrocket.
Geometry Dash Update 2.2 Sees Player Count Spike
The latest update for Geometry Dash, Update 2.2, has seen the all-time peak player count of the game rise to 88,346. Prior to this, the peak player count was 16,518. This is all due to Update 2.2, which has added a massive amount of content. This includes new levels, modes, and Editor features that allow players to create their own levels. Most surprisingly, this is the first major Geometry Dash update in almost 7 years. The last major update was 2.1, which was released in January 2017. While there was a minor update in between, update 2.11, the game had been left alone by the developers, albeit in a complete state.
The closest comparison in recent memory was Cyberpunk 2077’s player count spike. That came as a result of the hit Netflix animated show Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and a series of major updates to the game. Nevertheless, Geometry Dash’s sudden rise to fame again is surprising, even considering the game’s previous success when it was first released. The developer has taken to X (formerly Twitter) to post a humorous meme of Thanos emerging from his hut with the tag “check steam.”
