Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Is it Open World?

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth sees players escape the confines of Midgar and head out into the world beyond, but just how open is it?

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth picks up Cloud’s story where its predecessor left off. The group flees a ruined Midgar in pursuit of Sephiroth, with destiny in their hands. The journey will bring new locations such as Junon and Cosmo Canyon. However, as players have seen many stunning environments, many are curious if they are fully explorable in an open world. In the guide below, we provide the details on what to expect.

Is Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Open World?

Yes, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is open world. However, it is not fully explorable right away; rather, it opens up more as the story progresses. With virtually no loading screens, players can trek on the game’s map from region to region with a seamless experience. However, they will not be able to instantly fast travel to many later regions of the game until they unlock that area.

The open-world style of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a shift from the Final Fantasy 7 Remake. The game was predominantly built up of linear corridors with the occasional small area to explore. Additionally, locations in the game would only change based on where players currently were in the story narrative at the time.

The gaming mechanic of open-world exploration isn’t new to the Final Fantasy franchise. Final Fantasy 15 had the entire map of Eos to explore, with a big part of the narrative taking place in a car. Whether Square Enix chooses to continue with the open-world treatment is something that only time will tell.

That’s everything you need to know about the game’s open world. If you enjoy this guide and want to see more about the game, including how long the story is, be sure to head to our Guide Hub here.
