Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is finally here, and it has received a massive amount of love despite mixed user reviews.
Elden Ring took the world by storm when it was released in 2022 and captured the hearts of many. Now, its first expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, has finally been released, and it has only continued to build on the incredible game.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is the highest-rated DLC of all time, earning the Must-Play badge on Metacritic through a whopping 95 Metacritic score from around 60 critic reviews. Specifically, on PC, it has earned a score of 93, on PlayStation 5 a score of 95, and on Xbox Series X|S also a 95. These critic scores show that Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree has been beautifully crafted for players.
However, despite these high scores on Metacritic from critics, the player base seems to disagree somewhat. Although user reviews have scored 8.3 out of 10 on Metacritic, with a review here or there of a complete zero, Shadow of the Erdtree has received a Mixed rating on Steam from 31,466 reviews. These Mixed reviews seem to stem from new technical issues in the most recent patch. These include micro-stuttering, frame drops, increased loading times, and intermittent freezing. Although technical issues are frustrating, players have also mentioned that while the DLC is too difficult to play, the bosses themselves also feel cheap.
Many users who have enjoyed the DLC have mentioned that players are not using Shadow of the Erdtree’s leveling system, which makes the DLC harder for them to enjoy and more challenging to complete overall. Resources such as Scadutree Fragments can be found in new areas when players explore the latest DLC. Unfortunately, many players have likely missed these precious items. Despite this information, with Shadow of the Erdtree already being a difficult expansion with the addition of technical issues, it’s understandable why many players are on the negative side of reviews.
