Is FF16 Open World?

FF16 doesn’t feature an open-world design. However, reports have confirmed that the game encompasses numerous expansive areas that players can freely explore and revisit throughout their journey. Therefore, the game combines linear story progression with elements of exploration, establishing a hybrid model.

Naoki Yoshida, the producer, speaks of the “extreme” attention to detail they have poured into the game’s development. Despite the lack of an open world, Square Enix has taken great care to make up for it through intricate details that enhance the game’s richness and depth.

Yoshida also described that removing an open world was so that they could focus on delivering the best game possible – without taking 15 years to finish development. “To bring players a wide variety of environments, in the highest quality possible, and ultimately enhancing game experience, we selected several areas that we wanted to focus on – and created those in extreme detail.”
