The Sims 4 to Introduce Vitiligo Skin Feature and Winnie Harlow Partnership

Leaders in gaming inclusivity, The Sims 4 team has officially introduced the Vitiligo skin feature update in partnership with Winnie Harlow.

The latest Sims 4 developer diary talks of the team’s time learning about Vitiligo, Winnie Harlow’s partnership, how they authentically implemented the newest skin into the Sims, and how players can use it; read below for more details.

What is the Vitiligo Skin Feature Update in The Sims 4?

Vitiligo is a skin condition that has been added into The Sims 4, affecting one to two people out of every 100, and presents as white, pink, or varying shades of lighter patches of skin to that of the surrounding skin. It can affect all skin types and ethnicities and is non-discriminatory in where it will appear on the skin, from the face, torso, and limbs.

The Vitiligo skin feature update joins the wide range of skin details players can use when creating their Sims; these include birthmarks, stretch marks, scars, and freckles. Representation has always been an incredibly important area of focus for the developers at The Sims 4 as they ensure they’ve empowered players “to tell diverse and authentic stories, and today’s update continues with these efforts.”

Once you’ve downloaded the update, you can access the Vitiligo assets in Create-A-Sim. Head to the skin category section in either the face or body, and you’ll have a wide range of options for the placement on your sims face, upper torso, lower torso, arms, and legs. Players will then be able to adjust the variant and prominence. A note from the developers here states, “All ages will have access to the same pieces, so your choices can stay the same as they age, or you can change them over time.”

Winnie Harlow Collaboration With The Sims 4

The newest Sims 4 update comes in collaboration with Winnie Harlow, the Canadian supermodel, beauty entrepreneur, and famously one of Vitiligo’s greatest spokespeople. Winnie herself was a big fan of the franchise, stating, “As a child, I spent a lot of time playing The Sims, and I think it’s so beautiful to be able to represent your true self in-game. This partnership is a powerful statement encouraging players to embrace what makes them unique – both in-game and in real life.” Read below for EA’s full statement of how the partnership will work in The Sims 4:

“Winnie, who was an avid The Sims player during her youth, is excited to share styling and interior design inspiration with players through an original content piece that showcases a Simified version of the fashion model’s Hollywood home. She gives a room-by-room tour of her dream home and talks about what this level of in-game representation with the Vitiligo feature means to her. Simmers can download her home from the gallery as well as play with the Winnie-inspired Sim.”
