The realm of the paranormal is a vast and enigmatic one, capable of gripping anyone’s curiosity and prompting profound questions about the nature of our reality. Oxenfree is a game centred on paranormal encounters and their profound impact on one’s perception of the world. Having gained fame as an indie gem, Oxenfree now invites us to immerse ourselves once more in its sequel, Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals.

“The game not only allows exploration of the eerie world but also delves deep into the psyche of its protagonist.”

Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals is a narrative-driven supernatural horror game that revolves around the mysterious radio frequencies activated by hand radios. Through these frequencies, players gain the ability to interact with time rifts and tormented ghostly spirits.

The game not only allows exploration of the eerie world but also delves deep into the psyche of its protagonist, Riley Poverly. As players progress, they embark on a chilling journey of self-discovery, uncovering hidden truths and encountering vital life lessons amidst the unsettling encounters.

The journey begins when Riley regains consciousness at a bus stop and hears a voice emanating from her hand radio. The voice belongs to Evelyn, who directs Riley to meet up with Jacob and assist in setting up a transmitter. Little does Riley know that this seemingly innocuous task will mark the beginning of an otherworldly and haunting expedition on the haunted isle of Camena. As the transmitter activates, it triggers a series of paranormal events that sets the stage for the gripping adventure ahead.

“Even with prior knowledge of the first game, getting lost during crucial dialogue sequences can happen.”

During her adventure in Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals, Riley experiences multiple instances of being transported to both her past and future. These experiences compel her to learn from her own self, enabling her to progress not only in the game but also in life. Throughout Riley’s coming-of-age journey, you witness her growth during a night filled with confusion and terror, making you releft on the frightening aspects of life that one might be hesitant to confront.

With the same premise being used in both games it’s easy to understand Oxenfree II: Lost Signals without the need to know what happened in the first game. However, being familiar with the previous game does offer advantages, as it provides a deeper understanding of the overall story and the referenced characters, as well as the collectibles scattered throughout the game.

Even with prior knowledge of the first game, getting lost during crucial dialogue sequences can happen, and unfortunately, some of the context might be loosely forgotten. This can be frustrating, particularly when understanding the context becomes crucial for events later in the game. However, the intense and captivating nature of the game during these moments makes up for some of the information that may have been missed or not fully grasped.

The art style for Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals is breathtakingly simple and inviting, adding to the eerie nature of the game. The picturesque sequences with the camera only extend the unique style, despite how scary the can game be.

With such nice visuals, the complimentary soundtrack only adds to the overall atmosphere. The dark synth-wave following you closely makes your hair stick, achieving this with its crisp eerie tones.

“Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals brought a great sense of nostalgia.”

The controls in Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals were incredibly simple and user-friendly. Interacting with characters and utilising the radios felt almost intuitive, especially when using a controller. However, the controls on a keyboard could be somewhat chaotic at times, making a controller the recommended choice for a smoother gameplay experience.

Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals is a highly enjoyable and well-executed sequel. Building upon the mysteries of the first game set on Edwards Island, it delves further into the consequences on Camena. The narrative was expanded, uncovering new facets not explored previously and providing satisfying answers to all the lingering questions.

As a fan of the original, revisiting Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals brought a great sense of nostalgia. The well-executed horror scenes heightened the excitement, and gradually unravelling the intricacies of the story was immensely gratifying. If you are a fan of the original, the second game is a must-play and definitely worth its current price range, especially if you can pick the game up on special.
