Jack Black has seemingly let the pixelated voxel-based cat out of the bag by confirming his role as Steve in the upcoming Minecraft movie.
This news follows from reports from January of this year. Back then, it was hinted that Black would be playing the blocky default protagonist in the movie based on one of the most successful video games ever. Now, after a cheeky social media post from Jack Black himself, it seems that the veil has finally been lifted.
Jack Black Confirms Role As Steve in Minecraft Movie
Beloved movie star Jack Black has seemingly confirmed his role as the titular character, Steve, in the upcoming Minecraft film set to release in 2025. Black posted a short but sweet behind-the-scenes video on his Instagram account, which heavily hints at his role in the movie. In the video, Black sings about a double rainbow (harkening back to this viral internet classic) in the sky before moving inside his trailer. Check it out below:
In the video, we see a Minecraft movie sign labeled “STEVE” stuck to the trailer door as he moves in. Inside the trailer, Black shows various pictures of Steve before he looks at the camera and gives a cheeky grin. If that wasn’t enough to convince you, a quick look at Black’s IMDb page also seems to confirm his role as Steve in the Minecraft movie. He will join an accomplished and prolific cast, including Emma Myers, Jennifer Coolidge, Jemaine Clement, Kate McKinnon, and Jason Momoa.
This isn’t Black’s first go at playing a videogame character in a major feature film. Last year, he brilliantly portrayed Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie., to the acclaim of fans and critics alike. Later this year, Black will lend his voice as Claptrap in the upcoming Borderlands film. That will be released in August. This makes it the third time he will portray a videogame character on the big screen in just two years.
However, those looking forward to seeing Jack Black as Steve will have to wait just a bit. The Minecraft movie is scheduled to release on April 4, 2025.
