Minecraft: Nether Update is Live Now

Revealed originally at Minecon 2019, the Nether Update is a new update to Minecraft. The update focuses heavily on the nether region, with new biomes, items, and mobs introduced into the game.

Previously revealed as a Snapshot for Minecraft Java, The Nether Update is live now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android, Windows 10, and more on the Bedrock version, and Windows, Mac OS, and Linux on the Java version.

We have got you covered for all the information in the new update!

Netherite

First and foremost, Netherite is the new guy in town, and he is better than Diamond. Netherite is a new high-level ore found exclusively in the Nether. Netherite tools are faster and more durable, plus Netherite weapons do more significant damage than diamond. The Armor is more durable than diamond, and unlike other armor, can’t be destroyed by lava.

To make a Netherite ingot, you must combine 4 Netherite Scraps with four gold ingots. You can acquire netherite scrap from smelting Ancient Debris or search treasure chests in bastions (a newly generated structure).

New Mobs

Piglins/Zombiefied Piglins

Piglins are, by default, hostile mobs that love gold. Wearing gold also protects you from being attacked by Piglins. The player can barter with Piglins by throwing gold ingots near them or using gold ingots on a Piglin. In return, a Piglin will drop one of the following items:

  • Enchanted Book with Soul Speed (random level)
  • Iron Boots with Soul Speed (random level)
  • Iron Nugget
  • Splash Potion of Fire Resistance
  • Potion of Fire Resistance
  • Nether Quartz
  • Glowstone Dust
  • Magma Cream
  • Ender Pearl
  • String
  • Fire Charge
  • Gravel
  • Leather
  • Nether Brick
  • Obsidian
  • Crying Obsidian
  • Soul Sand

Hoglin/Zoglin

Originally called Piglin Beast, Hoglins are boar-like hostile mobs that are the primary food source in the Nether. They are the only breedable hostile mob and will attack the player on sight, flinging them into the air. Fortunately, Hoglins won’t attack the player if they are standing near Warped Fungus (New Block). After being in the overworld for 15 seconds, a Hoglin will start shivering and transform into a Zoglin.

Strider Minecraft Nether

Strider

Striders are passive mobs that are resistant to fire and, in fact, spawn in lava seas. They can walk on lava and be saddled by the player. However, the player can’t control the movement of a strider. Instead, you must use a “warped fungus on a stick” similar to how a pig is controlled by a “carrot on a stick”.

New Biomes

Nether

Basalt Delta

Basalt deltas are volcanic biomes in the Nether. Blackstone and Basalt consume most of the landscape while Gravel, Magma blocks, and Netherrack spawn near the lava seas’ shore. Magma Cubes, Ghasts, and Striders spawn naturally here.

Nether

Crimson Forest

Crimson forests are dense, red-themed biomes in the nether. The forest features a red fog with floating particles filling the sky. The generated terrain consists of Crimson Nylium, Netherrack, Nether Wart, Huge Crimson Fungus, Fungi, and Crimson Roots. Striders frequently spawn here as well as Hoglins, Piglins and Zombified Piglins.

Nether

Soul Sand Valley

Soul Sand Valley’s are large areas that cut through the Nether terrain. The biome consists of Soul Sand, Soul Soil, Gravel, Soul Fire, Crimson Roots, and Nether Fossils. Nether gold ore, nether quartz ore, and ancient debris also generate here. Mobs that spawn include Skeletons, Ghasts, Endermen, and Striders

Nether

Warped Forest

The Warped Forest’s are dense, blue-themed biomes in the nether. The biome is filled with Warped Nylium, Netherrack, Warped Wart, Huge Warped Fungus, crimson and warped fungi and roots, nether sprouts, and twisting vines. This is the only biome in the nether which doesn’t feature hostile mobs.

New Player Generated Structures

Basalt Pillar: Tall terrain features made up of basalt found exclusively in Soul Sand Valleys.

Bastion Remnants: Large, castle-like generated structures found in the Nether in all biomes except basalt deltas. Piglins spawn in this structure on generation. They contain treasure rooms and are the only way to obtain the Pigstep music disc and the snout banner pattern.

Huge Fungus: Tree-like structures that generate in the Nether. There are two types of huge fungus: Huge Crimson Fungi spawn naturally in Crimson Forests, and Huge Warped Fungi spawn naturally in Warped Forests.

Nether Fossil: Generate randomly throughout the Nether in soul sand valleys. They are compromised of Bone Blocks.

Ruined Portal: Naturally generated damaged nether portals, which spawn in both the Nether and the Overworld. Ruined portals generate with a chest containing various golden items and obsidian and flint, and steel.
