Is Helldivers 2 Open World?

Helldivers 2 offers a variety of bot and bug-infested alien planets to drop into, but players are still unsure whether or not it is an open-world game.

In Helldivers 2, you must “spread democracy” in the most bombastic and explosive way imaginable as you rid the galaxy of enemy alien factions, one planet at a time. However, as more and more players are getting their boots on the ground, many are wondering whether or not Helldivers 2 is an open-world game. We go into it below.

Helldivers 2: Is It an Open World Game?

No, Helldivers 2 is not an open-world game. Despite allowing you to explore the surface of various planets within the Sol system, these areas are limited in size. They have an enclosed perimeter that will prompt you to head back to the main map area when you cross it.

This means that you will only be able to explore a limited area per instanced zone. The size of the zone is determined by the type of mission you pick at the Galactic War Map back on your ship. Here, you can rotate each planet and pick missions based on type and difficulty.

That’s not to say you won’t be able to explore at all in Helldivers 2. Depending on the mission you choose, you’ll get to explore a procedurally generated area in a designated zone. While exploring, you can stumble upon points of interest, destroy Automaton Fabricators and Terminid nests, in addition to recovering and uploading valuable data, to name just a few.

Of course, there’ll be plenty of Automatons and Terminids that’ll do their darndest to get in the way of all that. Thankfully, you can call down devastating lasers from the sky to make short work of them. Our weapons tier list should also help your efforts in eliminating alien scum for the good of democracy!
