Baldur’s Gate 3 players have recently come across a frustrating “Incompatible Version” error when trying to load saves.
This error is tied to the latest hotfix (#4), and, luckily Larian Studios are aware of the issue and are currently working on it. Thankfully, while it’s frustrating to receive the error, no BG3 progress will be lost.
Why Do You Receive The “Incompatible Version” Error in Baldur’s Gate 3
The Baldur’s Gate 3 “incompatible version” message is due to the player trying to load a save that is in a different version than what their current game is on. Unfortunately, this is occurring because Larian Studios released the latest update, Hotfix #4, and realised the update was causing crashes for some users. Therefore, Larian has rolled back the update and removed Hotfix #4, with the latest update now being Hotfix #3.
While this seems quite straightforward, the issue arises with saved games. According to Larian, “If you’ve saved since updating, you won’t be able to load those saves until we’ve re-published Hotfix 4.” Therefore, all Hotfix #4 saves are currently inaccessible until the developer updates the game to the latest update.
How to Fix The Incompatible Version Error in Baldur’s Gate 3
Unfortunately, there is no current fix to bypass the “Incompatible Version” error. Due to the way the error is conceived, players must wait until Larian Studios updates the game to Hotfix #4, or replay their progress.
