Kiryu’s adventure in Like a Dragon Gaiden expands on the protagonist’s tale, but when does it occur chronologically?
The Yakuza series by Sega is expansive, featuring many titles and with many playable protagonists. However, Like a Dragon Gaiden looks to show more of the fan-favorite character Kiryu Kazuma from the original games. Players curious to know when this latest game takes place aren’t alone. Luckily, we have the details below of when this latest Yakuza game takes place.
When Does Like a Dragon Gaiden Take Place?
Like a Dragon Gaiden occurs two years after Kiryu’s apparent demise in Yakuza 6: The Song of Life. It also takes place about a year before encountering Ichiban in Yakuza: Like a Dragon. This puts it in the year 2018, which is several years before 2024’s Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.
Yakuza 6 ended with Kiryu faking his death to protect others around him from his enemies, in turn becoming “The Man Who Erased His Name.” Two years later in Like a Dragon Gaiden, he lives under the assumed identity of Joryu and works as a bodyguard. However, after being targeted by unknown assailants determined to find out he was still alive, Kiryu sets off on a path to keep his secret quiet and those closest to him safe.
