BG3: How to Become an Oathbreaker Paladin

Becoming an Oathbreaker Paladin in Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t the easiest of tasks, despite there being plenty of ways to become one.

From forming relationships and romances with countless characters to creating an entirely unique class, Baldur’s Gate 3 is a game with almost endless content. You can even find hidden subclasses for your classes throughout the game, and here is how you obtain the Oathbreaker subclass for the Paladin.

How to Become an Oathbreaker Paladin

While playing as a paladin in Baldur’s Gate 3, actions must be taken in order to activate the hidden Oathbreaker subclass. This can be done by breaking your chosen oath. However, breaking your oath doesn’t automatically make you a villain, you can choose to become that as well. Essentially, an Oathbreaker Paladin chooses not to follow a moral guideline set out by the oath they took; making the character a freelance paladin of sorts.

There are many different opportunities throughout the story narrative of Baldur’s Gate 3, where a Paladin must choose between the moral choice and what they are obligated to do by the oath they have taken. Choosing to be moral will allow them to break the oath and, in turn, become an Oathbreaker Paladin. Throughout the campaign, options will come up, for those wishing to make the choice to break the oath, here is how you can do it.

Ways to Break The Oath in Baldur’s Gate 3

Oath of Ancients

Paladins who have sworn the Oath of the Ancients are tasked with fighting for the side of light, but there are a few options to break the oath. Players who do any of the following tasks will break the Oath of the Ancients:

  • Kill an innocent
  • Free Sazza or kill Tiefling Pandima in Emerald Grove
  • Eliminate an Owlbear or Owlbear cub
  • Using Ethel’s wand to resurrect Mayrina’s spouse

Oath of Vengeance

Those who took the Oath of Vengeance and swore to uphold the law over what is right can break their oath in the following ways:

  • Allowing Akra to kill the caged goblin Sazza or free them.
  • Torture Liam at the Shattered Sanctum.
  • Tell Nightwarden Minthara the location of Emerald Grove.

Oath of Devotion

The paladins of the Oath of Devotion have their own ways that they can choose to dissolve the oath. These include:

  • Torturing Liam in the Goblin Camp
  • Turning on the Goblin Camp
  • Killing the captured Tieflings
  • Allowing Akra to kill the caged goblin Sazza
  • killing someone of weak standing will have the oath broken.

Just remember, these are only some of the ways to break your oath and become an Oathbreaker Paladin. You might accidentally break your oath without even trying. Fortunately, these is one final step before you become an Oathbreaker if you want to turn back.

Final Step to Being an Oathbreaker

Once Paladin players have completed a required action to break their oath, as mentioned above, the last step requires them to return to their camp and speak with an NPC called the “Oathbreaker Knight.” This will present the player with a final choice on whether they wish to follow through and become an Oathbreaker Paladin or pay for sinning and return.

The benefits are undeniably better for Oathbreaker Paladins as they can access new abilities, and enhance their overall experience. As stated before, breaking an oath doesn’t cause you to become evil, it’s more just a different journey from a standard Paladin. The choice is entirely up to the player and, with what you know now, what will you do?
