Players looking to take The First Descendant on the go will likely want to play it on the Steam Deck. But does it even run on Valve’s handheld?
The First Descendant may not feel like the perfect match for the Steam Deck, but there’s nothing quite like blasting enemies on the go. Of course, there will be plenty of handheld enthusiasts out there hoping to jump onto the latest trendy game. So, for those hoping to hunker down and play The First Descendant in the bath or the train, here’s what you need to know about its Steam Deck performance.
Can You Run The First Descendant on the Steam Deck?
Yes, you can absolutely run The First Descendant on the Steam Deck. In fact, so long as you put it on the right settings, you can get it to run surprisingly well. However, you’ll have to make some concessions to get it running on the handheld. To hit the 30 to 40 fps mark, you’ll need to bump the settings down to low.
Of course, there’s no way you can get PC-level visuals, or even PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, on Valve’s plucky handheld. However, what you will get is somewhat closer to the PS4 and Xbox One visual quality, albeit slightly downgraded. Nevertheless, in action, it looks fairly impressive, especially in combat against the game’s towering bosses. If the Steam Deck is your main way of experiencing games, or you’re willing to accept the trade-off, then it’s a perfectly acceptable way of playing The First Descendant. You can see the game running on the Steam Deck in the video below.
To get the best performance, we recommend turning everything to Low other than Anti-Aliasing, which you should keep on Medium. You’ll also need to switch V-Sync, Motion Blur, and Ray Tracing to Off. With these recommended settings, you will hit a consistent 35 frames per second, with the occasional spike up to 40 or down to 30. That’s everything you need to know about playing The First Descendant on the Steam Deck. For more guides just like this one, be sure to check out our Guide Hub.
