Macabre Is the Extraction Horror Game You’ve Been Waiting For

Developer WeForge Studio has officially launched the Kickstarter campaign for its game Macabre, leaving extraction horror fans giggling with glee.

With some incredible games releasing this year, there has never been a better time for another extraction horror game to begin creeping onto the scene. Fortunately, Macabre aims to do just that. However, it needs some support from us, the community. Below, we’ll look into what you can expect from the Kickstarter campaign and everything we know about Macabre.

What Is Macabre?

Macabre is a horror extraction game set in the snowy mountains of Australia. In it, you play the role of a Rift jumping enthusiast who hopes to collect rare and valuable items to help unravel Macabre’s mysterious secrets. A Rift is a bubble of endless timelines, each different from the last. Unfortunately, entering a rift is a one-way ticket. You’ll need to collect loot, craft items, and figure out a way to extract your hard-earned items. Of course, all of this must be done before a monster finds and kills you.

The monster in question, known only as the Macabre, is a four-dimensional shape-shifting being that can transcend timelines. Unfortunately for you, it doesn’t want you exploring the Rift and will actively start hunting you once you arrive. Whether that is because it simply loves the taste of human flesh or something much deeper and darker, we are yet to find out.

Macabre gameplay

Macabre is a devious hunter and will carefully stalk players, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Your team will be required to use stealth, perfectly timed distractions, stuns, or even sacrifices to fend it off. Additionally, if someone strays from the group, Macabre will actively target them for an easy kill. Anyone who plays Helldivers 2 with a friend who never sticks with the team will enjoy watching them get murdered by Macabre, time and time again.

Staying with your team is the key to success. That is unless you think you have what it takes to go solo. In Macabre, you can betray your friends, steal their loot, and laugh your way to the bank. It’s a great risk-reward system that will keep the team arguing over who the bigger threat is: Macabre or each other.

Finally, you’ll need to find Fragments scattered throughout Rifts and take them from other timelines into yours. Finding Fragments allows you to craft items that will help you combat Macabre and reach the extraction with all of your collected goods. Once you extract, you’ll be able to buy upgrades in the player lobby.

How to Support the Macabre Kickstarter

The team at WeForge Studio is looking for your help to self-publish. The Macabre Kickstarter Campaign will officially go live on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, at 8 am ET/5 am PT/1 pm BST/10 pm AEST am EST. Early birds will have the opportunity to snag exclusive discounts. So, act fast to avoid missing out on its limited edition goodies. You can check out the Kickstarter page here.

However, if you’re late to the party, don’t fret, as you’ll still be able to get your hands on a swath of limited edition skins and collectibles, such as a 6” tall model of the monster Macabre itself. Better yet, Kickstarter backers will be given Alpha access, as well as the opportunity to shape the direction of Macabre, from the landscapes of different Rifts to new monsters and much more.

Macabre doesn’t look to be too far away, with the team pushing for a 2025 target release date. It will be initially released on PC and then be ported to console with full cross-play support at a later date. VR gamers can also rejoice, as VR support will be coming to the game in the future.

We have huge hopes for Macabre and with the bones we’re looking at, it looks promising for the community. For now, though, we’ve told you all we know about Macabre and will certainly be backing it. The question is, will you? If you want to join the Macabre community, Join the Discord, and Wishlist it on Steam here. For more indie news, be sure to check out our Guide Hub.
