Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn: Is it a Soulslike?

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn looks to be a challenging experience, but is it a soulslike. Here’s what you need to know.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is shaping up to be the next Xbox Game Pass hit. So, it’s unsurprising that lots of players are flocking to see what it’s all about. Of course, some may see people refer to it as a soulslike and be put off playing it. However, Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is built a little differently.

Is Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn a Soulslike?

No, Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is not a soulslike, but it is being called a souls-lite. This means that while it isn’t as difficult as a soulslike, it is more difficult than your average game as it adopts a lot of the mechanics and ideas from the Dark Souls series. It is being developed by A44, whose previous game was Ashen, a soulslike with a focus on co-op play.

While the combat could definitely be referred to as “soulslike”, there are plenty of tools at the player’s disposal to make things easier. For example, the amount of essence you earn (which you use on upgrades) increases exponentially the more attacks you deal without being hit. This multiplier will continue to increase until you are eventually hit, after which it’ll be reset. Additionally, you’ll have a constant companion called Enki, who also attacks enemies. Finally, you have a musket with which to deal damage from afar. These are just a handful of ways combat is made much easier than a traditional soulslike, but there are still plenty of soulslike influences you’ll need to be aware of.

Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn Combat

In GamesRadar’s preview of Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn, Simon Dasan, the creative director at A44, explained that they wanted to make the game “accessible” without “alienating the rhythmic combat from Dark Souls.” He went on to say that they didn’t want to “alienate the people who really do love a tougher experience.” So, expect a game that is challenging but not as brutally punishing as a traditional soulslike.

That’s everything you need to know about whether Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is a soulslike. For more guides just like this one, be sure to check out our Guide Hub.
