Rainbow Billy: The Curse Of The Leviathan – Demo Preview

I first heard about Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan at the rather excellent Wholesome Direct. Its colourful world, cartoony aesthetic and fun platforming gameplay enamoured me immediately. So, when I noticed that it was getting a demo at this year’s Steam Next Fest, I leapt at the opportunity to try it. Fortunately, Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan does not disappoint.

“What makes Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan’s story stand out is its phenomenally written dialogue that is both witty and pithy.”

It is interesting that a lot of upcoming and recently released “wholesome” titles tend to have cartoony visuals. They’re often reminiscent of children’s cartoons which often leads to the misconception that they’re for children. While Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan certainly looks like it’d fit right at home amongst Cartoon Network’s shows, it is absolutely accessible to an older generation.

The game’s narrative is, for the most part, your standard affair. But what makes Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan’s story stand out is its phenomenally written dialogue that is both witty and pithy. It expresses a lot with its vibrant and flashy text that pops on screen. Its diverse cast of characters also has wonderful personalities that help really sell this overly joyous world. Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan encapsulates that dreamlike childhood wonder while remaining entirely enjoyable to those whose childhoods are as distant a memory as the colour in Billy’s world.

“The generous demo for Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan shows only a snippet of the brilliance packed into this wonderfully wholesome title.”

Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan’s gameplay also captures the magic and nostalgia of our once whimsical childhoods. The detailed environments are a ton of fun to explore. The smooth vertical platforming in a 3D space also helps to make them feel more dynamic and vast.

Additionally, the large array of mini-games on offer are a blast to play through. They bring diversity to an already packed experience. To say that playing Rainbow Billy: The Curse of the Leviathan is an incredibly grin-inducing affair is an understatement.
