Marvel's Wolverine Insomniac Games

PlayStation Showcase: Insomniac Steal the Show

Partway through the PlayStation showcase event, two logos appear on the screen. Insomniac Games, followed by Marvel. There is country music playing, which is a little odd, but we all know what this is don’t we? It’s a new Spider-Man game or is it?

Surprise!

The camera pans through a decimated bar. There is carnage and dead bodies. Is this an intro to a new bad guy, maybe?

He looks familiar...

Who is that familiar figure sat at the bar, back to us? The angle changes and we see a particularly hairy pair of arms as a man in the background advances with a knife and then… snikt! The claws come out. This isn’t Spider-Man. This is Wolverine.

This is not what we were expecting! There isn’t much to go on here, of course, but fans of the Wolverine franchise will surely be happy that Insomniac is taking this on. Their track record so far has been fantastic, with both Spider-Man games and the latest Ratchet and Clank proving to be some of PlayStation’s best exclusives.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Reveal

Fortunately, there was more. Towards the back end of the showcase, the same logos appear again. There were more chills and a creepy voice-over. Fans of the franchise might have an idea who this could be, as we see both Peter and Miles working together to batter some bad guys. Then, in the shadows, the voice changes. Enter Venom.

Insomniac and Marvel

It seems that the future is sealed for Insomniac and Marvel now. Not content with just Spider-Man (or… Spider-Men), they have added Wolverine to the mix. We can’t comment on the Wolverine gameplay, of course, since we know nothing about it, but it’s fair to say that they won’t stray too far from the formula that has worked for them with Spider-Man.

As for Spider-Man 2, we can expect more of the same formula with some added innovation. Miles Morales proved that Insomniac aren’t afraid to mix things up, and the introduction of Venom is sure to get long-time Spider-Man fans excited for this upcoming instalment.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launches in 2023. Marvel’s Wolverine is yet to receive a release date. You can check out everything revealed at the showcase here.
