Lapis Re:LiGHTs Episode 1 Review

Lapis Re:LiGHTs follows a girl who has just arrived at a magic academy for witches. A student can choose whatever classes they want and they are divided into three ranks based on academic achievement. Noir, Rouge and Lapis, Noir being the highest and Lapis the lowest. She meets some new friends who are all Lapis and will be expelled if they fail again. But let’s be honest guys, this is an idol show, they are gonna sing and dance and through the power of friendship, save the day.

I really like the art style and the characters are fun and likable so far. The school seems fascinating to explore though I doubt we will do much more of that. The fantasy setting is very unique and it could keep the show just different enough to stand out in it’s market.

It has a lot of the idol tropes that I’ve gotten used to. Main character has a famous sibling, lots of other club options we won’t be exploring and an underdog rising to the top. I want to have hope this will stand out despite these tropes but we will just have to wait and see.

Lapis RE Lights

For what looks like a rather by the numbers idol show, there is a lot of potential here. The music was engaging and everything feels distinct and polished. We’ll have to see if Lapis Re:LiGHTs can rise through the ranks and make its mark this summer.

I plan to watch the first episode of every new show that is coming out this season. If you want to know what to watch, and what to stay away from, follow this series.

  1. So I don’t watch a lot of anime. But I love your description of “let’s be honest, this is an idol show,” because I IMMEDIATELY knew what you were talking about.
