Akupara Games has announced they are partnering with Silver Lining Studio to release their Ghibli-esque interactive fiction game, Behind the Frame.
Behind the Frame is a narrative-driven experience centred around an aspiring artist. It has already gone on to receive several awards, including The NYX Game Award for Best Visual Art and The Game Connection Asia Indie Development Award in 2020. Akupara Games are responsible for some critically acclaimed indie titles such as Mutazione, Manifold Garden and A Hat in Time. If their involvement with those previous titles means anything for Behind the Frame, it should turn out to be an excellent title.
What Is Behind The Frame?
Behind the Frame is being touted as interactive fiction or a “fleeting narrative-driven experience”. You will experience an emotional story about an aspiring artist who’s close to finishing her final piece for a gallery submission. This is a story that can be “enjoyed at any pace”, and is apparently a “serene, emotionally rich story”. The visuals definitely evoke a Studio Ghibli-esque style, with each location looking like a lavishly detailed painting. Here’s a breakdown of just some of the stuff available in Behind the Frame:
- Experience an emotional and evocative narrative about a painter on the cusp of greatness
- Explore beautiful panoramas, each one hand-animated and inspired by the work of Hayao Miyazaki
- Work on gorgeous paintings to complete your final masterpiece and recollect memories
- Solve contextual and logic-based puzzles
